Bailey Hatton's "Fool For You Again": Producing, Tracking, and Mixing a Josie Award-Nominated Texas Country Single
Bailey Hatton's "Fool For You Again" was one of those songs that was great from the first voice memo. I had the chance to wear every hat on this record. From production and mixing, to drums and mastering, I got to work with this song from pretty early in the process. I'm proud to say it's now a 2026 Josie Award nominee and is currently out to Texas country radio.
I wanted to take a minute to share a little about how this one came together, what it takes to get a Texas country single ready for radio, and why keeping a song in one set of hands from production through mastering can make such a difference.
A 2026 Josie Award Nomination and a Run at Texas Country Radio
The Josie Awards celebrate independent artists and the people who help make their music, so seeing "Fool For You Again" earn a nomination means a lot, both for Bailey and for everybody who worked on it. The song is nominated for “Music Video of the Year – Duo/Collaborations”.
On top of that, the single is now being worked to Texas country radio stations as well. That's a format I love and know well. Texas country listeners can tell when a record is real, and radio programmers can tell when a record isn't ready. My job was to make sure "Fool For You Again" was both.
Producing "Fool For You Again" From the Ground Up
When making production decisions, my first job is always the same: figure out what the song is trying to say and then get out of its way. A great Texas country song doesn't need to be overdressed. It needs the right parts, played with the right feel, supporting a vocal that tells the story.
With Bailey, that meant building an arrangement that gave the song room to breathe while still carrying enough energy to stand up next to everything else on the radio. Every decision, from the tempo and instrumentation, to where the song builds and where it pulls back, was made to serve the lyrics and Bailey's voice.
Drums That Serve the Song
I've been a working drummer my whole life, from small stages and major tours, to records that have topped the charts - and the biggest lesson I've learned is that the best drum part is the one that makes the singer sound better.
That's the same approach I bring to every remote drum tracking session. You send me your song, and I send back real, professionally recorded drums played specifically for your track that are ready to drop right into your session.
Mixing for Texas Country Radio
Mixing a country single is all about balance. The vocal has to be front and center and easy to understand, the band has to feel big and warm without crowding it, and the whole thing has to translate whether it's playing on a truck stereo, a phone speaker, or a club PA.
Because I'd been with this song since the earlier stages, I went into the mix already knowing exactly what every part was there to do. That made it easy to shape the record so the emotion of the song hits the listener the way Bailey intended, and so it holds its own on the air.
Mastering That Competes
Mastering is the last step before a song goes out into the world, and for a radio single it matters a lot. Your song is going to be played back to back with major-label national releases, so it needs to be competitive in loudness and clarity without getting squashed or losing its dynamics.
I mastered "Fool For You Again" to sound polished, consistent, and radio-ready across streaming platforms and broadcast, while keeping the punch and feel we worked so hard to capture in production and mixing.
Why One Set of Ears From Start to Finish Makes a Difference
A lot of independent artists end up passing their songs between a producer, session musicians, a mix engineer, and a mastering engineer who have never talked to each other. That can work, but things get lost along the way.
When I handle a song from production through mastering, the vision stays consistent the whole way through. The drums are tracked with the mix in mind. The mix is built with the master in mind. And you've got one person who knows your song inside and out and is invested in getting it right.
That approach has been part of records that have added up to over 72 million streams, two Gold singles, and chart-topping radio releases, and now a Josie Award-nominated single with Bailey. I'm grateful for every artist who has trusted me with their music.
